About Dr. Shay Bintliff

My poetry had its beginning when I was a child of twelve. Growing up in Texas where children, especially a small girl, had no voice was always a mystery to me. My great aunt told me to find my voice in writing. I so loved the poetry book of Emily Dickenson that she gave me that I decided to write poetry. It worked! My thoughts and my feelings, at the deepest level, no matter how strange or different, found authentic resonance. Writing poetry continued to touch my soul, and expresses congruently my life as a parent and a physician.

“Dr. Shay Bintliff is a revered teacher, a treasure of Hawaii. In Soular Energy we hear from a poet, mother, pediatrician, surfer, E.R. pit doc, paddler, lover, friend to all she’s met. Her sensibilities were forged in wonder of the Islands., in the devotions of a care giver and in profound sorrow after great loss. These extraordinary poems enrich and inspire all who wade into their verbal surf. Like the ocean, they can be sunny and beautiful; but at times dark and deep. As a physician, I have used some of these poems to enable patients to understand and deal with loss. They are eloquent, direct, heart-felt, and powerfully therapeutic. Soular Energy is the essence of a valued mentor.”
